Two different minerals share the name: jadeite and nephrite. Vivid, translucent green jadeite, known as imperial jade, is the most valuable.

What to look for
- Even, bright colour and good translucency
- A fine, smooth texture
- Untreated jadeite is called Type A; bleached or dyed jade must be disclosed
